The Viking raced motorcycles in Europe once upon a time so he enjoys watching those races whenever he has the chance as well as getting on a bike for a good ride. I have never raced a motorcycle, except for a little Kawasaki mini bike my father bought when I was a kid and then it wasn’t so much racing as it was toodling around, so any interest I have in motorcycle racing is purely superficial and mostly to show my love to The Viking.
Rally Car Racing is another matter entirely though because I really like the idea of extreme driving…..hand braking my way into a parking spot at the mall or drifting my way around exit ramps. That would be some serious fun. Except I don’t know how to do that and I’m not prepared to attempt it in my lovely new car. So I watch rally car racing whenever I can. Unfortunately, North American sports channels very rarely broadcast Rally Car Racing so it was exciting to see a race broadcast on a Danish TV station when we were on our European Vacation last fall.
Two days later, The Viking borrowed a Harley Davidson from a friend and helmets from another friend and we went for a ride. Once we returned the bike and picked up the car we had to take the helmets back to the other friend. So, there we were driving on the highway in a Renault diesel sedan with two helmets in the back seat and guess what? I had a brilliant idea!
“Let’s put those helmets on like we are Rally Car Racing!”
“We are on the highway and they don’t race Rally Cars on the highway.” The Viking explained with a complete lack of imagination.
“Yes I know! That’s what would make it so funny!” I held up the map I was holding. “When we pass someone, they would look over and see two people in a car with helmets on and the visors down and they would think that a Rally Car team took a wrong turn and ended up on the highway! I could look directly at them and give them a ‘thumbs-up’ sign.”
“No.”
“Oh come on! It would be hysterical!”
“We are driving a Renault 1.9L Diesel. No one will think it’s a Rally Car.”
“Yes I know!! That’s what would make it even more hysterical!”
Sometimes The Viking shows a remarkable lack of imagination and an immensely stubborn disposition. I gave him my best I’m-very-disappointed-in-you look but he suddenly needed to keep his eyes glued to the road and I got bored after 2 minutes and gave up. It’s annoying how he uses my short attention span against me.
